Halloween

So ends a pretty bad month for me pokerwise.  I ended up losing a bit of money which sucks but I didn't play that many hands and ran quite bad for the most part.  I think I played decent overall, probably playing around my B-C game most of the time.  A lot of this month has involved me having to make hero folds over and over and over again which becomes very tiresome.  After making four in a row I just get fed up and pay off the massive nit with my overpair when he is repping his flopped boat (they always have it).  Maybe if I get better at poker I can keep making these folds but within me there is always an inner calling station that needs to be released at some point.

I just got back from a night out in Brighton and with it being halloween there were loads of people dressed up and having a good time.  Unfortunately, some people who probably act like annoying rowdy idiots when drunk normally, see the added factor of costumes a as a reason to turn this up a notch.  I did chuckle at two blokes who had decided to try to start a fight with each other while both in fancy dress.  The words, "seriously, you better fuck off right now or you're gonna get hurt" seem less threatening when coming from a man in a buzz lightyear costume.

One thing I like about halloween is they always put loads of horror films on tv.  Some of my favourite films are from this genre with my number one being The Shining.  What a film.  I think in scariness terms it still stands up brilliantly today, thirty years after it was released.  I was about 14 when I first saw this film and it really affected me, both in good and bad ways.  After watching it, I was left with a depressed feeling, but was glad I had had the experience.  So many of the scenes stay in your memory, like the blood coming out of the lift, when Wendy looks at Jack's 'work' on the typewriter or the steadicam scenes with Danny seeing the twins.  There's something really frightening about the thought of a member of your family, who you love and trust, radically changing personality and turning into a psycho with the potential to kill.  Scary stuff.

Won a donk

Only a small one but satisfying none the less.  This is actually (and frustratingly) my biggest ever online score in six years of poker and god knows how many tournaments.  I have concentrated on them quite a lot more this year and feel my tournament game has progressed a decent amount.  When people talk about tournaments they often mention the variance involved but I actually think even some of the long-term grinders underestimate it.

It turned out well because there was this article which detailed how a fellow pkr cash grinder Japete was going for his third win in a row in this tournament.  I was on his table with about 20 people left and watched him win about five flips in a row so figuired I was pretty much aiming for second place as he couldn't possibly lose.  Anyway we got heads-up and I managed to find a way to beat him eventually getting in KK vs his AJ (easy game) after grinding him down to 8bbs.

Apparently with tournaments when you win one you often win another one soon after (London bus syndrome or something) so I'm expecting to take down the Sunday Million anytime now.

Gareth Bale

What a hero....

His performance obviously doesn't make up for a rubbish first half display by Spurs.  Maybe they got a bit overawed by the occasion.  Spurs are at least showing a lot of resilience when they do go behind in games this season.  They could have completely capitulated last night and lost 10-0 but ended up getting a very respectable scoreline.  It really annoys me how the media immediately look at Bale's performance and start talking about his value and potential suitors.  He's only 21 and so often it ends up being the wrong decision when  players make their 'dream move' to a massive club.   It is going to be difficult to keep him if he keeps this form up especially considerong that achieving Champions League football next season will be so hard to achieve.

Ran rubbish at poker again today.  Played a lot of big pots, biggest of which was 9J vs 55 on a 995 flop in a 3-bet pot 200bbs deep at 5/10.  Probably going to take a few days off.

Wah Wah Wah

Not running too great at the moment.  Lost 9 buyins or so in 500 odd hands today on PKR which is quite difficult to do given the level of competition.  A couple of the big pots I definitely could have played differently but I think if they are mistakes then they are only small ones.  Certain villains seem to be floating the crap out of me at the moment in 3-bet pots.  I honestly don't know whether these people actually know what floating is, but are doing it anyway with great effect.

In other news, saw The Social Network last night and was pretty impressed.  I quite like how they didn't reveal exactly how Mark Zuckerberg and Sean Parker came to the decision to screw over Eduardo so you don't really know for sure who's behind it and have to make up your own mind.  Ultimately the film attempts to show that Zuckerberg has bad facets to his character and made mistakes but overall he's a 'good guy'.  The film is certainly going to negatively affect how the general public views him and that makes me feel really sorry for him. Oh wait, he's the CEO of a company that's worth $25 billion.  I think he'll be ok.

Off to watch Inter Milan vs Spurs on tv.  COYS!

Live Poker

I've been playing a lot of live poker recently with pretty mediocre results.  I went to London at the end of September to play a couple of  side events for the EPT.  Unfortunately I am not yet balla enough to play the big main events.  I could sell action I suppose but that's not something I'm interested in doing just yet.  I mini-cashed in a £500 event for £1100 which was annoying because I went into the 2nd day with a really good stack but couldn't get much going around the bubble.  It's really frustrating to get four steal attempts in a row 3-bet by very tight players!  I also whiffed a £1000 event which wasn't much fun mostly because the guy next to me had a cold and was coughing and spluttering over me for nine hours before busting me with one of those classic live nitrolls (I shoved A9o for 26bbs otb after a HJ open and he had called in CO.  Blinds folded and he tank called with TT sigh).

I also played some events in Brighton last week when the GUKPT was on.  In £200 one I built up decent stack before running KK into AA.  Kings vs Aces is by no means a standard stack off in live poker but in this situation I was pretty readless on players because I had just been moved to the table and I was the cold 4-bettor in the blinds when we were 60 odd bbs deep so pretty standard imo.  I then played a £500 event at the Rendezvous casino in Brighton marina where I got nothing going really.  The field in that one was ridiculously tough for a £500 event mainly because James Dempsey and Chris Moorman live in Brighton (I think?) and brought a load of their MTT specialist friends along.  I had JP Kelly to my left and James Mitchell also on my table so it really sucked to have two people who are almost certainly better than me at live tournaments at my table for a £500 event.  James Mitchell ended up cripping me when we got allin with QTo vs my T7ss on Q67ss flop.  I think he should have folded but maybe he just wanted to gamble.

I lasted less than two levels in the GUKPT main event when I got in AKhh vs 66 on 67Qhh flop.  I could have played this differently but I give my opponent credit for betting a really awkward amount  into me on the flop when I had squeezed pf so I decided to raise/call.  I think just flatting here vs this particular opponent might have been better but whatever.  If I had hit I wouldn't be thinking much about it obviously.  It's just so hard not to be results orientated in live poker even though the logical side of your brain is telling you that the variance in it, especially in tournaments, is so huge.  You can't help but feel a bit depressed when you don't cash a few tournaments in a row even though this is ridiculously standard.  I must give credit to my mate Mark who final tabled the £200 and £500 events and then ended up bubbling the main event despite having a load of chips throughout the 2nd day.  I wish he hadn't donked off all his chips though because I had 20% of his action!  Luckily I did manage to win in cash games in London and Brighton so that was good.  The highlight of this was playing £1/2 after busting the from main event and managing to win back my buyin back despite running KK into AA twice in the session!

I've still not decided whether I like live poker or not.  Sometimes I really enjoy it and other times it can grind down on your soul.  I definately feel like I'm getting better at it so at least thats something.  I'm back on the online grind now so hopefully I can run good for an extended period of time because been running quite gash for the last few months.
